Temporary Home Treatments for Thinning Hair

Have you been noticing your hair thinning while in lockdown or in quarantine? While it is never recommended to delay professional treatment for any potential medical condition including hair loss, there are some things that may help temporarily reduce your symptoms until you have a chance to see a trained hair loss specialist. Remember, only professionals can truly identify the cause of the problem and suggest more permanent treatments.

• Yoga, prayer, meditation, and other similar methods may help your body’s reaction to stress, which can alter thyroid and hormone levels in the body that can potentially lead to hair loss.

• Acupuncture may help enhance a body’s overall functions and address disease conditions which can lead to hair loss.

• Eliminate potential food allergens including dairy, wheat/gluten, corn, soy, preservatives, and food additives.

• Eat foods high in B-vitamins and iron such as whole grains (if no allergy) and dark leafy greens.

• Take vitamins A, C, E, B-complex, and minerals such as magnesium, calcium, zinc, and selenium.

• Eat foods that are rich in antioxidants including blueberries, cherries, tomatoes, squashes, and peppers.

• Avoid refined foods such as white breads, pastas, and sugar.

• Eat more lean meats, fish, tofu (if no allergy), and beans for protein.

• Use healthy oils such as olive oil or coconut oil.

• Avoid trans-fatty acids that are found in commercially baked goods such as cookies, crackers, cakes, French fries, onion rings, donuts, processed foods, and margarine.

• Avoid coffee and other stimulants, alcohol, and tobacco.

• Drink 6-8 glasses of filtered water daily.

• Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

If you have symptoms associated with hair loss, you should seek professional help. A physical inspection of your hair and scalp will help identify the type of hair loss.
