Fast-forward to a few weeks ago, ABC News in New York reported on a woman who has been taking medication for arthritis and has grown her hair back.
She has Alopecia Areata, which is a medical condition that causes people to lose patches of hair or go completely bald. She had lost all of the hair on her head and her eyelashes and eyebrows in 2010 when she was 18 years-old. She tried several treatments that didn’t work for her so she started wearing a wig.
Under the care of a doctor, she tried an arthritis drug called Xeljanz, which a small study has shown that more than 30% of the patients who participated in the study re-grew some hair.
After being on the drug a few months, she started to regrow hair and she now has a full head of hair and says that she has had no side effects.
While this sounds very promising, please keep in mind that this is far from being an approved use for this drug. And also remember that any drug comes with a list of potential side effects, some of which can be severe, that you and your doctor would have to discuss and weigh the risks versus the possible benefit, before you try something like this for yourself.
A safer alternative would be to explore the options that have already been approved and are currently available for use at New England Associates®. There are laser hair therapy treatments, topical solutions, nutritional supplements, hair replacement systems, and surgical hair transplants just to name a few of the most common and popular options that have been working well for people for many years.
