Beehive Hairstyle Inventor Dies

Much has been made of the many celebrities who passed away in 2016, but there was one person we lost who may not have made many of the lists but was very influential: Margaret Vinci Heldt.

You may not have heard of Margaret Vinci Heldt, but her famous beehive hairstyle has been worn by stars from Audrey Hepburn to Amy Winehouse, and even on cartoon figures such as Marge Simpson.

Margaret Vinci Heldt first fashioned a cone-shaped hairstyle for a magazine cover in February, 1960. Because of its shape, it was dubbed “beehive.” The style went on to become associated with 1960s fashion and was worn by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and countless Hollywood stars. Heldt said her inspiration for the beehive came from a small black velvet fez hat.

Heldt passed away at the age of 98 last year.
