Winter Hats

With the first snowfalls of the season and sub-freezing temperatures in New England recently, it’s time to break out the winter hats. Keep in mind that not all hats are good for your hair’s health and appearance because hats can lead to static and squished curls among other things.

If you have curly or wavy hair, don’t wear hats that stick close to your head such as a ski hat because they will squash curls and any volume that you may have. Instead, think about using a tam, beret, fedora, trilby, or any other loosely-knit hat that doesn’t press down or cling to your head so you have enough space to maintain the shape of your hair.

Also think about the fabric of the hat. No matter what kind of hair you have, you don’t want something like wool that is rough and can snag your hair because that can lead to split ends and damage to your hair. Softer fabrics like cashmere, silk, and angora are better. If you must wear a wool hat, however, try lining the inside of the hat with a softer fabric such as silk.

If you have longer hair, you can loosely twist it into a rolled bun or tuck it up under the hat to try to limit flattening.

To reduce static, you can try using dryer sheets inside the hat or applying a styling product such as Moisturizing Formula Conditioner or  Conditioning Mist from New England Associates® along the inside of the hat and around the hat band.

If you feel that your hair is becoming excessively dry or damaged, or if your scalp becomes dry or irritated from wearing a winter hat, you should consider having your hair and scalp examined by a trained expert to see if there are any potential long-term problems to be aware of. Early diagnosis and early treatment are always a good idea, regardless of the situation.

If you are interested in a no cost, no obligation private examination, contact New England Associates® today. At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair and making the right choice to solve any problems, matters.

Ever since Mr. Trump became a public figure there has always been speculation and ridicule about his infamous hair. His hair is such a popular topic that it even has its own Twitter account (http://twitter.com/TrumpsHair) and there is a website where you can virtually play with Donald Trump’s hair.

To show what a good sport he is about his hair, last month Mr. Trump let Jimmy Fallon mess it up on The Tonight Show:

Arthritis Medicine Offers Hope to Millions as Hair-Loss Cure

Two years ago we told you about a hairless man who grew hair back while participating in a study of an arthritis drug.

Fast-forward to a few weeks ago, ABC News in New York reported on a woman who has been taking medication for arthritis and has grown her hair back.

She has Alopecia Areata, which is a medical condition that causes people to lose patches of hair or go completely bald. She had lost all of the hair on her head and her eyelashes and eyebrows in 2010 when she was 18 years-old. She tried several treatments that didn’t work for her so she started wearing a wig.

Under the care of a doctor, she tried an arthritis drug called Xeljanz, which a small study has shown that more than 30% of the patients who participated in the study re-grew some hair.

After being on the drug a few months, she started to regrow hair and she now has a full head of hair and says that she has had no side effects.

While this sounds very promising, please keep in mind that this is far from being an approved use for this drug. And also remember that any drug comes with a list of potential side effects, some of which can be severe, that you and your doctor would have to discuss and weigh the risks versus the possible benefit, before you try something like this for yourself.

A safer alternative would be to explore the options that have already been approved and are currently available for use at New England Associates®. There are laser hair therapy treatments, topical solutions, nutritional supplements, hair replacement systems, and surgical hair transplants just to name a few of the most common and popular options that have been working well for people for many years.

If you are interested in learning more about how New England Associates® can help you get your hair back, contact us today to arrange a no-cost, no-obligation private consultation with one of our hair loss professionals who will help you with the options and solutions that would be best-suited for you and your lifestyle and your individual circumstances.

Fall Weather Hair Tips

Changes in the weather can take a toll on your hair making it lackluster, dry, frizzy, and brittle. You can help make your hair shiny, bouncy, and smooth by following these easy tips:

  • Load your diet with fall foods that are good for your hair and skin. Drink plenty of water which can help to keep your hair well-conditioned.
  • Use tepid water for washing your hair. Hot water can rob your scalp of natural oil and lead to dry hair and dandruff.
  • Avoid shampoos with SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate), DEA (Diethanolamine), and other harsh chemicals. Such ingredients may cause allergic reactions, scalp irritation, brittle hair, and may cause hair loss and stop hair growth. It is worth it to invest in a quality shampoo and conditioner.
  • Avoid using blow-dryers, curling irons, and flat irons because the artificial heat harms your hair.

If these tips don’t help, it is possible that there may be some underlying issues that are affecting your hair and it would be good to have it checked out by a professional who has been trained in hair health before it becomes a problem. Contact New England Associates® today and schedule a free examination and consultation with one of our Hair Specialists.

At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair problems, and making the right choice to solve them, matters. We encourage you to come in for a no cost, no obligation private consultation so we can help you find a great solution which will fit in with your lifestyle.

Fall Foods Good for Hair and Skin

Around this time of year we see many different colorful fruits and vegetables all around us. Not only are they appealing to the eye, some of them are good for our hair and skin.

Oil from pumpkin seeds is full of vitamin E, zinc, omega 3- and 6- fatty acids, and antioxidants. It can help our skin and it can possibly increase hair growth because it inhibits an enzyme that may stop or slow hair growth by producing Dihyrdotestosterone (DHT).

Green apples have antioxidants that help our skin. Squash contains a lot of vitamin C and has beta-carotene that gets converted into vitamin A which is an antioxidant our body needs for our skin. Cranberries have vitamin A and vitamin C which are good for our hair. Pomegranate seed oil has a high content of an acid that helps strengthen hair by increasing blood circulation in the scalp.

If you are not a fan of such foods, you can get similar nutrition with HairStart® Maximum Growth Therapy and HairStart® Essentials™. Each contains various vitamins and minerals (among other things) that help to make hair stronger and stimulate new growth. If you are unsure which would be the better choice for you, you can discuss it with an expert who has been specifically trained in hair growth. The professionals at New England Associates® will perform a physical examination of your hair and scalp and help identify potential nutritional deficiencies.

At New England Associates®, how you feel about your hair loss, and making the right choice to solve it, matters. We encourage you to take the time and review the possibilities and come in for a no cost, no obligation private hair loss consultation.

You Can Play with Donald Trump’s Hair!

Donald Trump’s hair has long been the butt of many jokes and comedic fodder and there is also a website that lets you have a little fun with it yourself. You will see his eyes follow around the screen as you drag a trumpet around his face, tap or click to blow the horn, and watch what happens. You can try it yourself at www.trumpdonald.org.

While we do not recommend ever blowing a real trumpet anywhere close to anyone’s ears, we do recommend a number of treatment options and items to help people keep as much of their own hair as possible and get back hair that they may lose.

At New England Associates® you will find every successful method that effectively stops hair loss and repairs, replaces, restores or regrows lost hair. Are All Laser Hair Comb Devices The Same?

handheldlaser

You may have seen or heard similar devices advertised on TV or radio, but what makes the devices we have to offer at New England Associates® different from those in the ads?

Our staff and our experience helping people with their hair loss problems since 1982.

The professionals at New England Associates® can answer your questions on the telephone before placing a mail order for a laser comb. They can talk to you about how the devices work and they can be helpful if you may be wondering about any optional products or a package that includes some of our best hair-growth products to go along with your new laser comb.

At New England Associates® locations, you can meet with one of our hair loss professionals in person and get a free hair and scalp consultation to find out if one of our home laser devices would be more appropriate for your type of hair loss or if our in-clinic treatments would be better for you. Either way, we track your progress so that treatment options can be adjusted if needed. We also show you how to use the home devices and in the rare event something malfunctions and the unit needs to be exchanged, we would help you with that.

You can read more about laser hair loss therapy and watch what a few people have to say about it here.

CBS News Reports “What People Really Think of Men with Hair Transplants”

A few days ago CBS News reported about a new study which essentially concludes that men who have had hair transplants are viewed as younger and as more attractive than men who do not have hair: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-people-really-think-of-men-with-hair-transplants/ .

The study used data from an article written in The JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Facial Plastic Surgery (© 2016 American Medical Association) which includes data from a specialist in Miami, a doctor who leads a team in the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, and other noted specialists in the medical community.

The study showed that men with hair possess “youth, attractiveness, success, and approachability” and that “having hair is associated with professional accomplishment as well as trustworthiness”. It points out that we have not had a bald President of the United States of America since Harry S. Truman, and in 2008 less than 20% of all male US Governors and Senators were bald.

A Journal commentary says that transplants “reverse baldness and improve the attractiveness of those with hair loss”, but also essentially says that it is important for hair loss professionals to understand and know when other options (such as laser therapy, Minoxidil, and hair replacement systems) may be better for patients.

At New England Associates®, we offer state-of-the-art transplants by an award-winning surgeon who has performed thousands and thousands of procedures for more than two decades, as well as all of the other options that work to replace, restore, repair, and regrow hair. We have almost 35 years of experience in helping men (and women) look and feel their best. Helping people make the right choice to solve their hair problems is what matters to us.
