George Washington’s Hair Found in Book
Last month around the day that would have been President George Washington’s 286th birthday, news came out that historians found what they believe is a lock of his hair that was tucked away in an old book.
On History.com they say that in the 18th and 19th centuries it was not uncommon for hair to be given as a keepsake or collected as a souvenir.
Researchers at Union College in Schenectady, New York were doing an inventory of their library and in an old almanac they found an envelope stuck between the pages with notes which lead them to believe that the hair inside belonged to President Washington.
They also note that unlike many men during those times, President Washington did not wear a wig.
