Hair loss in new mothers is not uncommon. A lot of new mothers notice some hair loss after having their baby. This is normal and it may not be a permanent condition. It may be a case of shedding caused by lowered estrogen levels and sometimes does not require anything to fix it. Shedding is often at its worst about four months after giving birth. If it lasts longer than that or if it becomes excessive, a hair loss specialist should be consulted to be sure there will not be any long-term effects. It may become more difficult to solve problems if too much time passes. And it’s good to be sure that there isn’t something else causing your hair to fall out because people lose hair for many reasons.
Here are some tips that can help your hair look a little fuller for those first few months after childbirth:
- Use a volumizing shampoo that contains ingredients such as protein. This coats your hair and makes it appear to be fuller.
- Avoid shampoos that say they are a “conditioning shampoo”. These contain heavy conditioners that weigh down your hair and make it look limp.
- Avoid conditioners labeled as “intensive conditioners”. These are also too heavy.
- Use conditioners for fine hair. These are lighter and should not weigh down hair.
- Use conditioner primarily on the ends of your hair because applying conditioner all over can weigh down hair.
Finding the best shampoo and conditioner for you is often going to be trial and error. At New England Associates®, we have created a line of such products based on our 40+ years of experience in helping people with their hair.
In addition to trying the best shampoos and conditioners, you can try a new hairstyle which can help make your hair look a little fuller. Many new mothers prefer short hair because a shorter style can make hair look fuller and it can be easier to manage after having a baby. A good experienced hair stylist can tell you what hairstyles may work for you. You can contact us to schedule an appointment with one of our stylists who specializes in making thinning hair look great.
