Does Smoking Cause Hair Loss?

If you’re like most people, you may be looking at your hairline or scalp and attempting to self diagnose your hair loss. What most people don’t realize is that a healthy lifestyle may significantly contribute to the overall health of your body, and that includes your hair.  With all the research over the past few decades, everyone is aware that smoking leads to countless systematic problems with your health so why would your hair be included in this?

The truth is smoking is probably the worst habit anyone could have. If you smoke, you are damaging nearly every organ in your body including your hair. That’s right, smoking not only causes cancer, but it may also cause hair loss too. Smoking may cause hair loss because it reduces the circulation to the extremities, it can cause pollutants in the blood, which affect the liver. And it can also cause minor clogging of the scalp’s pores.

Smoking not only may cause balding, it also affects current hair. Smoking constricts the blood flow to the scalp causing your hair to be brittle and dull looking. And if the hair is turning grey it could be because of the toxins that are in cigarettes. Hair follicles need a continuous supply of oxygenated blood so they can grow like they’re supposed to. Smoking on the other hand affects the blood supply which means that your hair is not going to grow like it should. Smokers also crave nicotine, when their body does not receive nicotine it raises their stress level. And high amounts of stress may also cause hair loss.

Needless to say, smoking is not the only reason for your hair to thin or go grey, but it is a factor. Most importantly, second hand smoke is just as threatening. Even if don’t smoke, smoke can be a reason for your hair loss. In a crowded city the toxins and chemicals in the air from cars, factories and smokers may cause adverse effects on your hair.

Did you know, men and women who smoke are twice as likely to lose their hair as people who don’t smoke? The only way to stop premature hair loss, hair thinning and graying hair from smoking is to quit!

Keep in mind, if you’re experiencing hair loss, never self-diagnose yourself. The best thing you can do is come in and see a hair expert.
